Step 1: Installing the plugin

If you want to use the theme with the cart66 ecommerce plugin then you need to install this first. Go to Plugins / Add new / Search and search for “cart66″. There’s a lite and a payed version, but both function the same way. The payed version has a couple more option which can be seen on their website.

Step 2: Setting up some products

Once you’ve installed the cart66 plugin you’ll be able to create your products! Go to Cart66 / Products and add a couple of products. Once they have been created you can link them to your menucard items.

Step 3: Linking products to your menucard items

Go to one of the menucard items you created earlier and take a look on the right of the page. In the top right should now be a dropdown where you can select one of the products you’ve just created in step 2. Once you’ve picked one, the price and cart button will be added to that menucard item. This combination will allow you to combine the power of posts with the power of an ecommerce system.

Step 1: Activating the custom home page

To get the widgetized homepage, go to Appearance / Reading and change the setting to “My latest posts”. Make sure that you haven’t selected a static homepage, or the custom homepage won’t show up.

Step 2: Setup your widgets

You can find this under Appearance / Widgets.

As you can see on the right side of this page, you can find a place to add widgets (a maximum of 3) in the “Frontpage Top”. Use the “Custom Featured Content widget” to get the same result as in this demo on the frontpage.

You can also place more widgets underneath the “Frontpage Top”, then use “Frontpage Bottom” to place more widgets!

Step 1: Browse to Slides

You can find this under the left side, in the same menu as the posts and pages. Click on “Add New Slide”.

You will get some formfields like displayed in the screenshot above. To add a picture for a slide, press on “Set featured image” on the right to upload a (new) image. The correct dimension for the image in the slider is 1020×400 pixels. Make sure your images are this size, or it might not look the way you want it to.

Step 2: Ordering your slides

You can order the slides by the publish date. This means that if you want to have a specific image/slide as first image to show up, you need to alter the publication date. You can find this on the right side, above the update button.

Step 1: Create a page

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go to the following page: “Pages”
You will see a screen like this screenshot:

Now, press on the button “Add New” to make a new page. You will see some formfields to make a new page.

Now give the new page a name like “Menucard” and a little description. In the block “Page Attributes” (on the right side) assign “Menu Card” in the dropdownlist from “Template”. At the “Additional Settings” block you can select the categories you want to show in the menucard, for this example, we check “Pasta” (the one we’ve made in the add a product tutorial) If you want to show more categories check them too. To change the order of the categories, simply drag and drop the checkboxes in the order you want.
Now press the blue “Publish” button to save the page. You now have created a menucard with the category pasta, we now have to display it in the navigation menu.

Step 2: Insert in navigation menu

Now go to the following page: Appearance / Menus

In the block “Pages” select “Menucard” and press the button “Add to Menu”. If you’ve done that, “Menucard” will appear on the right side, in the block “mainmenu”. Now press the blue button “Save Menu”. The menu-item “Menucard” is now visible in your navigation menu!
If you want the categories in the menucard to show up in a dropdown menu, simply drag and drop the categories to the menu, just like we did above. Drag them just under the menucard page, so there is a little bit of space on the left. This will tell wordpress that this page or category is a ‘sub-menu’.

That’s it! You now have your very own menu card!

Step 1: Browse to menuproperties

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go to the following page: Appearance / Menus
The first thing you’ll notice, when you’ve installed the theme (and wordpress) for the first time, is that the theme doesn’t display anything useful.

What you’ll also notice, with most new wordpress installations, is that one page, “About”, is automatically generated. But it won’t display properly in the menu at this moment. (As seen in the picture above)

Step 2: Create the navigation menu

To create our first menu, fill in a name on the right side, in the formfield with the text “Enter menu name here”. For this tutorial, we will name it “mainmenu”. When you have given it a name, press the “Create Menu” button.

You can now select “mainmenu” at the “Theme Locations” block on the left. Press “Save”. This means you’ve assigned your menu to the top bar from the theme (with the yellow stars).

Step 3: Create the first menu-items

Lets create the two menu-items, “Home” and “About”.

Click on “View All” at the “Pages” block to show the pages you can assign for the menu. As you can see, there are two items right now, “Home” and “About”. Click “Select all” so the two items are selected. Now press “Add to Menu” so the two items will appear on the right side. Now click the “Save Menu” button so the items will appear on the frontend.
You now have created your first menu-items for the navigation menu. Before we can add more menu-items like the menucard, we first have to create products and then assign them to a menucard.

To get a good idea of what shortcodes look like, and what they do, take a look at this page: Shortcodes. Use them to devide your content into smaller columns, or to add lines to seperate paragraphs.

So how do we set up a column? First, decide how big you want your column. On the shortcode page, you can see all the different sizes. Next, place the shortcode in your content. Be sure to close it like in the example below. Closing it means putting a ‘[/column]‘ tag at the end of the column. All the content you want in your column should go between your starting en closing tag.

So what does this all mean?
Size: the size of your column. You can choose between 2×1, 3×1, 3×2, 4×1, 4×3
Title: The title of your column. This is completely optional, so it’s up to you to use it or not.
Last: Only use this if it’s the last column on a row (horizontally). This will prevent it from jumping down the page.

Step 1: Browse to Posts

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go to the following page: Posts / Add New

Click on “Add New” to create a new post. You will have the view like in the picture above.

Step 2: Add a product

Now fill in all the details for the product, like the name, a full description that will be shown in a full post, the menu card price and a description that will be shown in the menucard. Make sure, that if you want people to read the full description that you check the “Link title to full post” in the “Additional settings” block.

Step 3: Categories

To get a product in a proper category, go to the block “Categories” and press on “+ Add New Category”. For this instance, we’ve made “Pasta”. Just check pasta and your product is set for that category.

When you have this all ready, press on the blue “Publish” button in the “Publish” block. Congratulations, your first menucard-item is published! Just repeat the steps above for adding more products for the menucard.
Now that you have an item, we are going to create a menucard to display this item, you can check the tutorial for that over here.

Step 1: Create a new sidebar

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go to the following page:
Appearance / The Restaurant themesettings / custom sidebars

Here you’ll be able to add new sidebars. Make sure that you don’t use special characters or capital letters here. Once you’ve added the sidebars you want, save the settings page.

Step 2: Add widgets to your new sidebar

Browse to the widget page that you can find under “Appareance / Widgets”. Here you can add a new widgets to your sidebars. If there was an error with the naming of the sidebar (like using special characters) you’ll notice that the widgets you put in your sidebar, will have disappeared after you reload the page. When this happens, make sure your sidebar names are all lowercase without special characters and spaces.

Step 3: Adding your sidebars to specific pages

When you create or edit a page you’ll be able to asign a sidebar to that page under “Additional Settings”. Simply select the desired sidebar from the dropdown and save the page. That all there is to it!

Step 1: Browse to install page

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go to the following page:
Appearance / Themes / Install Themes

Step 2: Upload the .zip package

To install the theme, you need to upload it to your server.
Now choose ‘Upload’ at the top of the page. Here you can upload the .zip package.

CAUTION: Before your proceed make sure you unzipped the package you have bought from Themeforest.

Select the ‘therestaurant.zip’  file and press ‘Install Now’. Make sure you have the correct zip file, and not the whole package.

When it’s done press ‘Activate’ to set your newly acquired theme as your current theme.
Congratulations! You’ve installed The Restaurant wordpress theme!
